An exciting new chapter is unfolding at 826CHI. At the end of this month, we will be moving out of our Wicker Park space as we look to find a new home for 826CHI’s Writing Lab. This marks a period of transition and possibility that also allows us to prioritize bringing our tuition-free programs directly to students in communities throughout Chicago, working directly in schools and with community partners.
During this moment of great transition, we are reflecting on and celebrating the fact that for nearly twenty years, we have welcomed students, teachers, and classes throughout Chicago to our space, inviting our young people to tell their stories, explore their identities, and develop their writing skills. Thousands of publications and tens of thousands of young writers have been a part of our tuition-free programs, and none of this would have been possible without the incredible support and championing of our volunteers, staff, community members, program partners, families, funders, and more.
826CHI has always been committed to remaining flexible and responsive to the needs of our community. To adapt and better serve our students, we will spend the next year working directly within schools across Chicago, as well as with other arts organizations and community partners. By strengthening our existing partnerships and forging new connections, we aim to eliminate barriers such as the lack of bus funding that hinder many students from accessing our enriching programs.
Moreover, we are elated to announce our upcoming residency with Steppenwolf Theatre for the 2024 - 2025 school year. As a partner-in-residence beginning in September, our collaboration will bring a multitude of programmatic opportunities for our students, which we’re excited to share this fall.
As we approach our 20th anniversary in 2025, we are seizing this moment to innovate and shape the future of 826CHI. Our mission remains unwavering: to deliver high-quality, tuition-free programs that support young writers on their journey from inspired storytellers to published authors. This next year is a pivotal time for us to enhance our impact and adapt to Chicago’s evolving needs.
